Liré is a collaborative work and document management system. It consists of a "living" document repository that changes and evolves under the control of its users. Liré allows the sharing, management, and reuse of knowledge effectively and efficiently.

Liré was developed and is used by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. It began with several years of research on practices of information creation, organization, exchange, and use, both on a day-to-day and a long-term basis. Liré allows for the evolution of documents, information, and related processes. Studies have confirmed the need for personal, collective, and organization-wide information spaces, supported by a virtual library assistant.

Metadata management
Maintains document logistical data such as author and creation date and also allows user annotations on documents.

Multiple indexes
Indexes documents with keyword/context pairs for searching, and allow users to link documents (along with comments) to indicate they are related. You can search over the content of the document, metadata attributes, and keywords.

Access control
Allows other users to view or modify documents and organizational structures. Creates multiple versions of documents, and impose a "check-in/ check-out" locking system to ensure consistency.

Web interface
Uses a web browser interface for platform independence and portability to make users' work available anywhere in the world.
